PrivateVilla Bolza Scanavino, in Loveno di Menaggio on Lake Como, is a listed historic villa protected by the Italian heritage authorities. Its oldest nucleus dates back to the 16th century, while an 18th-century transformation incorporated the original tower into an elegant residence. The restoration of its façades required a careful understanding of this history and a dialogue with the Soprintendenza, the authority responsible for the protection of Italy’s architectural heritage.
Giorgio Veronelli Architecture developed the project and directed the works in collaboration with specialist restorer Laura De Nardi. Stratigraphic investigations revealed the original white lime finish and traces of red decoration around the openings and at the corners of the building.
They also documented the later layers that had changed the villa’s appearance over time.
The restoration addressed damaged plaster and paintwork and used the findings to guide the new colour scheme.
Mineral silicate finishes were selected to recall the character of the historic lime-based surfaces. The colours draw on those identified through the investigations, while the decorative forms retain the arrangement of the most recent intervention.
The project demonstrates Giorgio Veronelli Architecture’s approach to restoring protected historic buildings on Lake Como: combining architectural design, specialist conservation work and direct coordination with the Soprintendenza.
